After missing Drew's last post for over a month, I'm back with a little update of my own. Those that know me understand I'm just not that good at not being in a band. I can't sit still I have to make noise and create on that level at all times. That said me and Travis have been having a killer time just jamming on our new project "The Outlaws of Zen". It took us all of two weeks to have our vision and name the project. Naming being one of the most difficult things that a band has to do.

As much as I'm excited to see that the guys from ATD come up with in their new endeavors I'm just as excited to be playing music that has been trapped inside of me for a long time. ATD was a mixture of everyone's influences which is where the magic of the sound came from. ATD did not sound like any of ours "band" is was all of our "band". With the OZ project it's different Travis and I share many influences and the Heavy Progressive High Energy Power Blues description is as easy as we came up with. A quick sounds like...let's see...Black Sabbath and Black Keys merged with Queens of the Stone Age.

Newly two months into the project we have a 30 minute set nearly ready to go. Now we are going to search for a musician to help us finish of the sound. It's great to be jamming still and creating music that I thoroughly enjoy and am excited to play. Maybe someday we will be able to share it with everyone.

Life "After the Dust"

So the last note of "Little Excuses" belted through the PA @ Bemo's, I stood up from my half ass one knee stance, thanked our wonderful people for their support over the last 6 years, and After the Dust was just that-DUST...... a distant memory that was once a brilliant, rocking group of young scholars ready to take on the world (ok- I'm being kind of sarcastic, but if you know me you probably already figured that out). I walked off stage, carried a few things to my vehicle, and officially began my "retirement." But Since that night, I've had a lot of friends, fans, and family asking me the same question that always puts a grin on my face- "What happens "After the Dust?" Well, to each of us in the band I think the answer has definitely varied. While Chad is banking on the "Where are they now?" reunion tour of 2026 (mainly because he wants to see me sporting a skullet- thanks, asshole!), Korey and Travis have wasted no time getting their new project "The Outlaws of Zen" underway--- They should be back out and on the circuit some time in the near future- I'm hoping maybe our paths will cross again and we can play some shows together when we all "get off the ground." Chris from what I understand is trying to get a little bit familiar with the recording aspect of music before returning to the actual scene itself. He's writing and singing more and I'm looking forward to seeing what direction he takes in his next project. And then there's me....

As soon as the news was out about the demise of After the Dust, I had received several offers from various people/bands that we're interested in jamming or working with me.... it was really cool and all very flattering, but it forced me to really stop and think. I was offered the chance to join another original band and I could have picked up right where I left off writing my own music and playing. But the aspect of the "original scene" is just not where I want to be anymore. I also had the opportunity to walk back into the cover scene. It drew (no, pun intended) my interest, but then I remembered why I had walked away from that scene in the first place- TOO MUCH TIME ABSORPTION! I just can't sacrifice the majority of the weekends to kill my voice for 4 hours each night playing "whore" to the audience. I needed to take some time off to figure out just who I am and where I want my place to be in music based off of where I've been, what I've learned, and what mistakes I want to avoid this time around. The truth is, I'm enjoying all of this right now. I don't need to step back into another situation that I'm unsure of just to say that I'm involved in music. I will say this though- I now have a pretty good idea of what I'm looking for as far as direction and yes- I AM putting a new project together. At this time though I won't say who I'm working with or give any other details, except this--- I've been working with a few different people---- some things have worked and some things have not. I don't know who will be involved in it when all is said and done. All I can say is that I'm working with some good, experienced musicians right now. I will also say this- I have NO timetable for getting this group out there (playing shows). One major thing that I learned from After the Dust is that it's better to take your time and make sure that things are right instead of throwing them out there unprepared. It's been a great month jamming with people and just having fun with not being committed to an idea, sound, or style. So my answer to all of you asking what happens "After the Dust" is this- I don't know and to be honest, I'm pretty damn satisfied with that. Korey and I have agreed to continue using this blog to update you and give you random stories about our new endeavors in music. I'll keep you posted on "the new project" as more information becomes available. Until then, have a great summer and thanks again for being a part of the ATD regime!

...I can't help but be excited.

I get to see all the great ATD fans one final time.
I finish up a chapter with these guys and end as friends.
ATD is going out while riding high.
I can finally concentrate on my new band.

Starting a second band or even project has been something I have wanted to do for years. Since the early days of ATD or even the late days of SeverCore (previous band). It was an ambitious idea that I never found the time for. So the last few weeks of having two bands was my first exposure.

That said...I think I'm better suited for giving one 100%. Maybe when I was younger there would have been time. I hate feeling like I compromise.

Maybe there is time for a band and a project but two bands??? I'll leave that to someone else. NO COMPROMISING!

After The Dust

2005 – 2011

To all of our friends, family,and fans, After The Dust has reached the end of it's road. We've decided that the time for the band has come and passed, no hard feelings, fighting, or drama; just time to move on. The last few years have held many highlights for After The Dust and we want to thank all of those along the way that have been there to share them with us.

Less than a month ago we sat across the table from a reporter who asked the question "What does the name After The Dust mean to you?". We had to tell him the name has never had any meaning; hidden or otherwise for us.

Last night Sponge's lead singer Vinnie Dombrowski did not have any problem with what it meant to him. While thanking us for opening the show he says "I'd like to thank After The Dust....After The Dust...what's that mean? To me it's that feeling at 6 a.m. after a night of Jack Daniel's and cocaine".

AFTER THE DUST: With 20 Originals, a Distinct Sound, and a Recent Battle of the Bands Honor Behind Their Belt, this Midland Based Group is Riding High

After the Dust is riding high on the mid-Michigan music scene and their enthusiasm and infectiousness registers as distinctly as the music they create, something that is evidenced by their recent selection of top honors by fans & critics in Phoenix Productions Battle of the Bands, which the Midland-based group won through a series of performances at Creative 360. In beating out the competition, this enabled the group to get $1,000 in cash along with substantial amounts of studio time, even though the band is no stranger to studios, having released two EP's and one full length album; their most recent, entitled Bloodshot & Burning, which can be downloaded at I Tunes.

Formed initially in May of 2005, After the Dust describes their blues infused brand of Rock 'n Roll as "a beautiful train wreck of radio friendly melodies, modern grooves, and heavy blues influence." Consisting of Drew Brady on lead vocals; Korey Gillespie on guitar; Travis Evans on bass, Chad Winters on drums; and Chris Crawford on lead guitar & backing vocals, the divergent roots of each member musically combine within their sound to create something unique and distinctly their own, while embracing their wide range of influences that helps them explore the borders of hard rock while occasionally jumping off the edges to explore new terrain.

After the Dust came together largely when Korey quit a former band nearly six years ago and found an old friend to write songs with. "Basically, we were jamming in my basement and because I'm not very good at not being in a band, we brought Chad into the fold and found a singer, booked some shows, and recorded an album," he explains. "Then we brought in Chris as a lead guitarist and went through another incarnation when our former singer wanted to take off for Seattle. At that point we brought Drew in as our lead vocalist and Chris started bringing in a prolific amount of riffs, which has been evolving our sound a bit. A little over a year ago, in November of 2009, our former bass player said he was finished, so we brought Travis into the fold. Things have been coming together in surprising ways ever since."

When asked what they feel distinguishes their sound as a band, Drew notes that before joining After the Dust, he was singing in the cover band Beefy Sloppy Gypsies and had never really done anything original until joining ATD. "It opened a whole new world for me."

The group admits that their style is influenced by the last four decades of music, but as Korey puts it, "We play the material we like at this point and don't really worry about what is being played on the radio."

"Our overall sound is different because all five us have differences stylistically," explains Travis. "If you took us apart and had each of us record a side project the sound would be vastly different from After the Dust. It's funny how collectively it all comes together."

When asked to describe those stylistic distinctions, each member is quick to respond. "I personally have a lot of '80s influences," reflects Drew, "and tend to dress up a little bit and display your average frontman swagger to get the crowd into it. Perhaps the biggest '80s band I was impacted by was Guns 'n Roses, with Motley Crue forming a big second. But mainly, was into the more bluesy influenced rock' n roll bands, so throw that into this pot to reinvent."
Korey states that while he came from a huge 'Metal' background, "I went to anything that got heavier until I wasn't young and angry anymore, at which point I went into more traditional rock 'n roll, Country, and Outlaw Country, along with '70s influenced rock 'n roll."

Travis points to his influences stemming more from obscure '70s material. "My biggest influence was Black Sabbath, by because of the Internet age and the ease at finding more obscure music, I've been following bands like Toad and Orangutan, who put out one record; whereas Chris notes that he moved From Zeppelin to Bob Dylan and then more into heavier melodic '90s bands like Blind Melon and Smashing Pumpkins.

With close to 20 original songs under their collective belt the group notes they always have about six songs brewing on the pot waiting for completion. "We came to an agreement to keep 20 active original songs rotating in our set-list," explains Travis. "Some get retired at a certain point and we definitely have more originals than we actually play; but what I've found with this latest incarnation is that a lot of our older material comes more alive from the new perspective of the band."

Touring the region has augmented the group's popularity, though they admit mainly they perform in Bay City, Saginaw, and Flint, performing in cities such as Mt. Pleasant and Lansing a few times each year. "Rarely do we go towards Detroit because you never know what you're getting down there," adds Korey. "The last show we did in Detroit seven bands were supposed to play and only two showed up. And then the two waitresses working wanted us to stop playing because they wanted to watch Family Guy," he laughs.

As for their recent Battle of the Bands win, Drew explains, "I like to refer to that honor as the best mistake we ever made. Travis signed us up for the Battle and I was against it at first, because most of those contests turn into popularity fights, but in this case, it really turned out in our favor. We won a lot of new fans, got some studio time, some money, and have been getting different press because of it."

Another significant factor is the group's determination to rehearse every Sunday, four times a month, unless they are doing multiple shows. Some immediate goals for the new year include having a professional video of their material shot as well as performing at more independent music festivals, plus they have openings for national acts slotted for the summer.

Although Chris has brought considerable creativity into the mix with the riffs he brings to the table, he is quick to point to the individual contributions of each member. "Many times I will give the group the germ of an idea and they take charge and run with it. Sometimes I'll bring a whole song it and they will play something new into the structure or add their own parts into the layering, but it varies from song-to-song."

"I always try to reach beyond the format and structure of my material and attempt different approaches," he continues," and I'll be doing more of that in this upcoming year. I think we each have a different flavor that we bring yet we all have enough similarities to work well together while bringing our individual strengths into the mix."

"On the last EP Chris brought a whole different taste and a new level of musicianship back into the band," reflects Korey. "He brought more fun back into it and with that last EP each song is different. We found a strong median point."

"We're always throwing new bands and new music at each other. Right now we're listening to this band called The White Suits that is basically a nobody band from Ohio that put out a killer release for free that we stumbled across."

Finally, what about their name? How did the group arrive at the moniker, After the Dust?
"That's a funny story," relates Korey. "We had 30 pages of names and narrowed them down to two that we couldn't agree upon, so we got out the shot glasses and had a drink-off to determine the winner. Then I checked the web for the name everyotherday.com because that's what we were going to call ourselves, only the site that came up had a nude guy with a message for free gay porn every day. Needless to say, After the Dust became our band name. I don't know exactly what it means, but that's what we got and it's who we are."

Battle of the bands

If you’re ready to rock, then November is your month.

Bands from all over the state will compete for a spot in the finals of Phoenix Productions Battle of the Bands at the 360 venue in Midland.

Aimed at bringing local bands to the top of the charts, Phoenix Productions is a promotional group that organized the event and is providing several bands the opportunity to perform each Saturday night for a chance at $1,000 and recording time at Guitar Sound Studio in Coleman.

This year, 12 bands competed, but just one band from each night will win a spot in the finals, with the exception of one wildcard band that may have performed exceptionally well but didn’t win their spot in finals the night they competed.

After the Dust, a rock band from Bay City, played on Nov. 6 and won the first slot in the final show by two votes. Other bands, such as Stone Comet and Falling for Sunshine from Midland and Calcaska from Flushing also played in the first round.

This past Saturday, Aurorealis from Mount Pleasant won the second spot, battling with bands such as Bands Mission, Sean Stout and Cartoon Babysitters.

“I love to play live, it’s much more fun than just being in the studio or practicing,” said Sean Stout, lead vocalist in his band. “These shows are a great way to spread the music.”

Saturday, Nov. 20, the last four bands will play. These bands include CTRL ALT DEL from Essexville, Before Color from Midland, Stars as Silhouettes from Saginaw, Before Color and The Shout Aways from Midland.

This past Saturday’s Battle of the Bands brought more than 100 spectators to the Midland Creative 360 stage, and like the bands, the spectators and sponsors were diverse.

Some bands played their first shows while others were seasoned veterans of the stage. Genres at the event include rock, alternative, indie, and folk. Some participants are in high school, others in college, many are older still but all of them passionate about playing.

“All the bands are incredibly talented,” said Ben Cohen, part owner of Phoenix Productions. “They deserve people to come out and watch.”

Cohen is enthused at the turnout and challenged supporters, especially students, to fill the house next week.

Judges are professionals from the local music industry, such as David Malinich from Guitar Sound Studio, Mike Duhamel from Mid-Michigan Music and Bob Hausler, founder of Mid Michigan Songwriter’s Guild.

Other local businesses, such as 360 Mainstreet and The Magic Bean also are supporting the event. Body Art Factory Tattoo and Piercing donated $50 dollars worth of free tattoo work to the winner of the competition and Mid-Michigan Music will raffle off one of their guitars during the final round on Nov. 27 at 7 p.m.

The Battle of the Bands event is hosted annually by Phoenix Productions and is open to anyone interested. Planning is under way for next year’s event, which Cohen hopes to host as a traveling event through Michigan. Anyone interested should contact Ben Cohen at Ben@ThosePhoenixProductions.com.

The next round will take place at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 20. Four bands will play at finals at 7p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 27. All rounds will take place at the 360 venue in Midland. Bands are competing for $1,000 and recording time in a professional studio.

Capping off 2010

We went out of 2010 on a good note. A win at the Phoenix Productions battle of the bands left us a $1000 richer and with a handful of studio time. The month long battle ended with us being named the winners. We always considered ourselves a long shot for the simple fact that the bands in the finals were hometown favorites, but hard work and the support of our fans helped us win over the judges.

Creative 360 was packed with fans for the final night of Phoenix Production's Battle of the Bands.

After the Dust emerged after the dust had settled on the evening, giving the band a large chunk of cash and some free recording time for a future project.

The Bay City-based band is composed of Drew Brady, Chris Crawford, Korey Gillespie, Travis Evans and Chad Winters. The five entered the battle not knowing what to expect.

Evans, the only band member from Midland, signed the group up to give them a chance to play for in Evan's town (their set lists don't get them many gigs in Midland, he said.)

"I signed us up, came to practice and told these guys 'by the way, we're in this battle,'" he said.

They won the first night by winning over the neutral members of the crowd. They had a good idea of how many fans they brought and could gauge how many fans the other groups had for support.

They said it was a good experience with mutual respect from the competitors, unlike some of the other battles they've played.

As for the finals?

"We prepared for it and just put everything we had in it," Brady said. The field was solid and diverse ranging from folk to heavier bands.

Ben Cohen of Phoenix Productions said the judges also thought it was a tough call. Judging the finals were Bob Hausler, founder of the Mid-Michigan Song Writer's Guild, David Malinich of Guitar Sound Studio and Mike Duhamel from Mid-Michigan Music.

"The band might have had a little more experience," he said, adding the judges commented that their vocalist also set them apart -- he was always on key.

The band does have a bit of experience, but the line up has changed since it was formed in 2005. Gillespie and some others just started jamming with no intention of playing shows, but it grew from there. Their initial vocalist eventually left and Brady joined, making the band what it is today.

"Although the band has been around for a while, its a pretty significant difference with the overall sound," Gillespie said, referring to Brady at lead vocals.

The Brady-led band recently recent an EP, "Bloodshot and Burning" and the guys are taking a break from shows this winter to get some more songs ready to record. Next, they have to decide what to do with their recording time from the battle (there was talk of recording a single, or a double single with another band.)

But it's probably going to be something new. They're all working on new songs and collaborating on writing. While they come from different influences, they all seem to agree on Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath.

They do have some big shows coming up. They're playing a New Year's Eve show at The Vault in Bay City and they'll be opening for Michigan rockers Sponge at The Prime Event Center in Bay City.

As for the battle, Cohen was "blown away" by the response the event got from fans.

"I've never seen so many people in Creative 360," he said. The field featured "the twelve best bands we could have had," (some playing their first show.)

Regarding the studio time...expect a new single in Winter/Spring 2011. We plan to bring in 2011 with a bang. New Years Eve will see us at the Vault in Bay City. In January we open for Sponge at the Prime in Bay City. February we will be performing 3 sets at the Roadside Inn in Linwood/Pinconning or as locally called "Pintucky".

Exciting things on the way as we move to longer nights. The plan for the year is to move north for a few shows so please let us know of your favorite Northern venues and festivals.

Musicians may be clueless in much of the "real world" but ask one where to go for "something different" to eat and you strike gold. This past Friday I was in Lansing and stopped at Elderly Music for a few minutes before it closed. As I was getting on my bike to head out one of the employees was out flyering cars so I asked him where to eat. Without hesitation "Lamia's Thai" is the destination and he goes about trying to teach me the way. It's a couple miles away but the directions are good. When I get there I can say that it's more than a little run down which I take as a good sign. It's not full but busy; another good sign. Authentic Thai buffet = excellent. Easily the best Thai food I've ever had. Some very unusual dishes as well as traditional Pad Thai, curried shrimp, and fried fish. Good and spicy with homemade chili sauce. For less than 10 bucks I had a killer dinner. As he put it the "place is off the hook" and I will agree. It's located on Michigan 1/2 way between downtown and Saginaw on the east side. Moral of the story a musician may flake out when you start talking politics but ask for killer cheap food and its off the hook.

Thank you, thank you..... Now as most of you know (hopefully), we have a big show coming up on September 9th @ the Prime Event Center in Bay City. I thought up this little game to not only get us and you guys ready for the show, not only to get you free ATD merch, but to also bring back our official fan club/mailing list. Here's how the game is going to work.

This is gonna be a huge show for us. Tantric has multi radio hits dating all the way back from 2000. Adema has their original lineup back.... and Burn Halo is sure to blow the roof off!!!!!!!! An awesome triple threat that will be rounded out by the rocking of none other than After the Dust!

The ATD rulebook on covers......

1. Songs must be "in the realm" of either rock, hard rock, blues rock or a combination of the three. We like to call this particular style "Blues Infused Rock n Roll."

2. NO TOP 40 BULLSHIT!!!!!! We are not a TOP 40 cover band, nor will we ever be, so songs like "Crazy Bitch" "All Summer Long" all to way down to "Brown Eyed Girl" and "Mustang Sally" are NOT FUCKING HAPPENING!

3. Stay away from songs that were a band's MOST POPULAR hit. We like playing songs that people will know, but we try to stay away from songs that are TOO overplayed or that every other asshole cover band does.

4. Songs with multi-harmonies will not work. Please remember that we have one singer, and sometimes one backing vocalist when Chris feels like it.... the rest of the time, we're screwed on harmonies!

5. If Anyone suggests "Come Together" in any format, Chad will fucking kill you! Seriously, he'll TEXT you to death!!!!!!

Stick with these rules, and you should be alright.....

So we had a very interesting discussion @ the practice house tonight. It all started when we were talking about the growing out and cutting of body hair on men. Chris was talking about the want to grow out his hair which ultimately turned into a debate over whether or not he should grow out a 70's porno mustache. This turned into the bet I'll never forget..... Chad, Korey, and Travis, each put up that Chris wouldn't have the balls to grow out a porno stache and keep it growing until November 1st.... Korey also threw in the incentive that any pop, beer, and energy drink cans left in the basement would also be given to Chris at the end of the 3 month span..... so I must ask this- will Chris agree to bet???? Will he have the testicular fortitude to pull it off???? Will the guys actually pay up if he makes an ass of himself???? And why is my cheap ass having nothing to do with this???? Stay tuned and find out what happens!!!!!

Update from the Studio

Getting ready for day three of the studio.

Day 1 was a grueling day of drums, drums, and more drums but all five tracks were completed and edited in the 9 hours we were there. Day 2 was a little more relaxing as Chris and I took turns laying down guitar tracks. After dialing in our sound we were able to track a good majority of the songs.

We will finish up the guitars later today and get Travis in to lay down the bass. Everything is sounding killer I'm already looking forward to showing off the work.

Even the good shows in Detroit have a few minor obstacles. 20 feet from my car 11 p.m. are 3 sleeping bums. Middle of the sidewalk. No surprise that with ears ringing, sweaty, stinking of smoke and cheap beer it actually seemed pretty natural.

Sometimes its the little things that make a night worth while. One of those is rolling up to a new club. A cool sign. Your name on a marque or not. In the current age of myspace and facebook so many pictures tell little white lies about the venue your brain fills in the rest to create the expectation and few things are cooler than when the expectation gets blown away by the real thing.

Rolling up to Cameron's a couple weeks ago was one such occasion. Walking inside finding a good size stage, a modern sound system, a cage, decent drink prices, and above all a crowd that likes music. Excellent.

You must appreciate the little things because even a show like this comes with a ton of challenges. The original promoter dropped out, no other bands where booked with us until the night before, communication lacked until days before, but overall it was a good experience. We found great new venue to play that we got our foot in the door.

More on promoters later...and yes I'm ready to burn that bridge.

I still drink. I like to drink. Sometimes I drink a lot.

That said at this point I am the lone documentarian for this introspective blog. It means the photos throughout the night are very front loaded and end loaded. Front because I haven't gotten into the drink and end loaded because I am now bored because I have run out of drinks.

Photography. Not my strong point. A 5 year old Nikon Cool Shot will catch whatever action my lack of photography skills don't hide.

The main point is that these stories must be recalled sometimes through the beer goggles. All things said we're glad your along for the ride to (and from) the show. Now get in the van it's time to hit the road.
